Implementing PQC in Solidity smart contracts faces challenges: larger key sizes increase gas costs, lattice operations aren’t natively supported, and on-chain verification of PQC signatures is prohibitively expensive.
Verifying an ML-DSA-65 signature in Solidity would cost millions of gas — far beyond practical limits. The polynomial arithmetic underlying lattice-based signatures requires operations that the EVM was not designed for. This is why on-chain PQC verification is not viable for Ethereum.
BMIC uses off-chain PQC verification through ERC-4337 bundlers with on-chain hash commitments. The smart account receives a proof that the PQC signature was valid without performing the full verification on-chain. This reduces gas costs to near-classical levels while maintaining quantum security.
Proposals exist for adding PQC verification precompiles to the EVM. If implemented, ML-DSA and ML-KEM verification would become as gas-efficient as current ECDSA ecrecover. This would make BMIC’s approach even more efficient while benefiting the entire Ethereum ecosystem.
