NIST’s 7-year evaluation involved hundreds of cryptographers worldwide. The standards underwent intense cryptanalysis from academic and intelligence community experts. NIST approval represents the highest practical confidence in algorithm security. US government systems and federal contractors are mandated to migrate.
ML-KEM (Kyber): lattice-based key encapsulation replacing RSA/ECDH. Fastest option with moderate key sizes. ML-DSA (Dilithium): lattice-based signatures replacing ECDSA/RSA signatures. Best performance-to-size ratio. SLH-DSA (SPHINCS+): hash-based signatures using only hash function security. Most conservative, largest signatures.
